Meso-Lung Cancer

Mesothelioma is a rare and deadly cancer directly linked to asbestos exposure. Lung cancer is more common but can also be caused by exposure to asbestos, even if you smoked. At-risk occupations include industrial jobs in the construction, milling, shipyards, heating, automotive, or firefighting industries. Military personnel are also at high risk of exposure. Approximately one-third of mesothelioma cases involve U.S. Navy or shipyard exposures. These are not cases against the government, they are against the asbestos suppliers.

There are also documented cases of mesothelioma caused by secondhand asbestos exposure. This type of exposure is common among the wives and family members of at-risk workers, who bring home asbestos fibers on their work clothes and unknowingly expose their loved ones.

The human body is unable to naturally remove or destroy these dangerous asbestos fibers, thus causing significant health issues including mesothelioma and lung cancer. It can take years between the time that a person was exposed to asbestos and being diagnosed with cancer. This long latency period means that most cases that are diagnosed today are actually caused by asbestos exposure that occurred decades ago.
